History of Death Railway

 History of Death Railway

December 8, 1941, The Great Pacific War took place. Japanese army intruded Thai territory. To defend the country, Thai Troops including police and people tried their best to fight against the Japanese intruders.

To stop fighting, peace agreement was made by two countries in January 1942. To construct rail bridge across the River Kwai at Ban Tha Makham located about 4 kms north of town center, Japan made agreement with Thailand on September 16,1942.

The construction of 300-meter rail bridge started from October 1942 and finished in December the same year. At present this wooden viaduct located about 100 meters south of the present River Kwai Bridge was already demolished

The River Kwai Bridge is part of the 415-km Death Railway starting from Nong Pladuk Railway Station in Thailand to Thanbyuzayat in Myanmar

During  the construction of the Death Railway, nearly 100,000 workers (war captives,Japanese soldiers including Asian labourers) died of malaria and famine
